Thato Moyo:A game changer in Ntalale Business Community

Thato Moyo, a 37-year-old entrepreneur and mother of two from Ntalale village in ward 11, Gwanda District has emerged as a significant figure in her local business community. Before embarking on her entrepreneurial journey, Thato faced financial challenges, surviving on a meager income of USD $25 per month from casual jobs. This limited income highlighted the need for sustainable employment opportunities and economic empowerment within her community.

In March 2023, Thato joined Hand in Hand Zimbabwe (HIHZ) ‘s supported SHG group Lerato Self Help Group under the Jobs Creation Project.  By participating in HIHZ’s Jobs Creation Project, Thato gained access to essential skills that proved invaluable for her business ventures.

Thato underwent six modular trainings in business development that were designed to equip her with the knowledge needed to run a business effectively. These training modules covered various aspects of business management, including financial literacy, marketing strategies, and operational efficiency. Additionally, she attended specialized technical workshops focused on broiler production, detergents production, and cutting & designing.

“I received business development trainings through (HIHZ) in March 2023. These trainings were an eye-opener as they made me  realize that ,l can start a business on a low income. I borrowed money from my self help group to start a grocery retailing business and now am witnessing a magnificent growth in my business,” said Thato.

The comprehensive training allowed her to diversify her business portfolio significantly by starting a grocery retailing business, detergent business and broiler production. This diversification of her enterprises not only broadened Thato ‘s revenue streams but allowed her to tap into different market segments and capitalize on various business opportunities.

Thato revealed that from her cleaning detergents (liquid soap, floor polish and petroleum jelly) she makes a profit of USD $120 every month. She added that her  grocery  business has become a cornerstone of her entrepreneurial efforts. Through effective management and strategic marketing, she has transformed this venture into a profitable enterprise.

Her hard work and dedication have yielded impressive financial results. From her grocery retailing business alone, she enjoys a monthly income of USD $550. After settling all business expenses she is left with a average profit of USD $300 each month from retail operations.

In addition to this income stream, Thato earns an additional USD $170 monthly from the sale of 100 broilers after every six weeks. The combination of these ventures has significantly improved her financial standing compared to when she relied solely on casual jobs.

Thato has purchased 15 goats and plastered her house, from the profits she made through her three business portfolio .

Thato Moyo’s success story is not just about personal gain; it represents a broader impact on the Ntalale Business Community. By creating jobs and providing essential goods and services, she contributes to local economic development and inspires others in her community to pursue entrepreneurship.

Her journey exemplifies how targeted support programs like those offered by Hand in Hand Zimbabwe can empower individuals  mostly women to break free from poverty and create sustainable livelihoods.
