Cattle Pen Fattening and Poultry production helps women strengthen livelihoods in Lupane.

 

Meet Phakamani Self Help Group (SHG) a nine member group who manages ,a Cattle Pen Fattening Enterprise in Mtshekwa village, ward 8 Sobendle in Lupane.In February 2023 , the nine female members joined Phakamani Self Help Group under the Jobs Creation Project, a Hand in Hand Zimbabwe supported group with funding from Hand in Hand Sweden.

The group specializes  in cattle pen fattening and poultry production enterprises. Moreso the members contribute $10 each month towards ISALs (Internal Saving and Lending Scheme). Before joining Phakamani SHG the group members were unemployed and depended more on handouts. However, through HiHZim community empowerment projects, the members received business management trainings which motivated them to start cattle pen  fattening enterprise.

The SHG supplies beasts and sells to renowned abattoirs (Mbokodo and Jotsholo). The group sells a total of ten (10) beasts after 90 days realizing approximately US$8500 in a period of 4 months. Their profits range from US$1000 to US$1400 per sale of ten (10) beasts.

 

 

Currently the group has also diversified into broiler enterprise. The group manages 100 broiler chickens every six weeks and they make a total sale of US$650 whereas their net profit is around US$236.

These enterprises have enabled these women to send their children to school and provide basic needs for their families ,showing a significant impact of the power of community intervention projects.
