Nkayi women sustain livelihoods through craftwork.

The Jobs Creation Project initiated by Hand in Hand Zimbabwe has had a profound impact on the Asambeni Sonke Self Help Group (SHG) from ward 5 in Nkayi District. This six-member group exemplifies the transformative power of the project, which aims to empower women and communities through entrepreneurship and skills development.

In 2023, Hand in Hand Zimbabwe provided training to the Asambeni Sonke SHG on a six-module program that included essential entrepreneurial skills. This training proved to be pivotal for the group as it equipped them with the knowledge and tools needed to start their own business venture.

Following the training, the Asambeni Sonke SHG decided to venture into craft making as part of the Jobs Creation Project. They began creating baskets, bags, and reed mats using dried reed grass as their primary material. By focusing on producing higher-value products, the group was able to enhance their livelihoods significantly.

The shift towards crafting high-value products enabled the Asambeni Sonke SHG members to improve their economic situation. They are now able to generate income that allow them to send their children to school and invest in household assets. This improvement in their livelihoods showcases the positive impact of the Jobs Creation Project on empowering individuals and communities.

Asambeni Sonke SHG serves as a testament to how initiatives like Hand in Hand Zimbabwe’s Jobs Creation Project can empower women and communities. By fostering determination, resilience, and empowerment, projects like these enable individuals to break out of poverty cycles and build sustainable livelihoods.
